Coping with pregnancy and motherhood – and my training

  • I read this nodding my head the whole time. I am a mother of 2 beautiful children aged 6 & 4. I am still trying to juggle being a working mum, keeping house and most importantly training. In the last few days I have finally come to realise that I am proud of what I have achieved with my body to date and what I achieve everyday to keep my wonderful family happy. You are right, things will never be like it was without kids but I could never imagine my life without them. I start each new day with a positive attitude and do what I can. What doesnt get done today always gets done the next day or the next day. Prioritising everything is the only way to go. Thank you for sharing this blog with us and for understanding the challenges we face as being mothers.

  • Hi Sue. Thanks for your words of wisdom. The weather outside is awful, cold raining and windy, the kind of day for movies and the couch!!
    I have 3 children, 4 year old 2 1/2 year old and a newborn (4 weeks) so this blog entry is staring at me. I need to get off my butt. Thank you. Been searching crash diets etc, but this has poped up at the right time for me. I will be kind and get focused on what i can do Now, eat well for my breastfed bub rest when i can and take walks when its a fine day. Streching and being kind to my body with the mindset to get back into it soon. thanks sue

    What a timely article for me. I’m currently typing this one-handed as my 2 week old son sleeps in my other arm. It’s witching hour and he wont settle – every time I put him down he starts wailing again…. and I thought I used to get tired before!!

    I’ve been a bit down on myself as I has planned to get out every day for a walk by now – something that has just not been happening. Where does the time go when you have a newborn??

    However reading your blog as made me realise I should be a little gentler on myself and maybe just focus on eating well and seeing any exercise in the first couple of months as a bonus.

  • I had a baby (my 2nd) around the same time as you and he has reflux toooo! My goodness- it is such a lot of extra work, and so isolating- I couldn’t take him anywhere because I was afraid he would vomit over everything: the pram or the car seat, or his clothes and mine on the way there; and not to mention someone else carpet or clothing. It was very challenging. The poor little possum wasn’t sleeping or evacuating… and I only have one boob that works (I had a nipple ring as a teen- I do not recommend it!), so you can imagine the size of my one cyclops-boob that was producing about thrice as much milk as it should, due to the vomiting.
    We only figured out it was reflux when he was 6 weeks though!… So it was definitely uphill from there.
    Funny thing is, because I’m not breast feeding, we accidentally fell pregnant only 5months after my little boy was born! Yikes! 3 kids and I’m only 25 yrs old!
    I’ve been following your programs for a couple of years and had the pleasure of a consultation with Kristin, and twice I’ve gotten into the best shape of my life by following your exercise regimes- both times I fell pregnant. So hows that for a testimonial to good health!
    I absolutely agree that prioritizing is EVERYTHING! It’s how I live too. After 2 pregnancies, and another in progress, I am an absolute ambassador for fitness for motherhood!

  • Well said!!!! After having a bad day i have just read your blog……(3 kids 5,2 and 6 months) i have been struggling to get rid of that excess kilos. Sleep dep is a killer along with just a busy life with kids and business’s etc. Sometimes we get caught up wanting things so badly we forge the bigger picture and instead of ‘punishing’ oursleves need to stop… take a deep breath and remember just how awesome we are!!! It is really nice to know we are all in that same big boat !

  • Great Blog Sue…and I was the same as you, I put NO pressure on myself to get my body back ASAP….there is sometimes too much pressure to be “super mum”…..I was slower at losing my baby weight than you, nine months out and nine months back in again :) – I had two babies back to back and we moved country, there was no time for me really….but I was fine with that…things got back to normal (as normal as they can with two kiddies :)) eventually – keep sending the great messages, we all need to hear them!! (and share our own!)

  • Thanks Sue for such a detailed and honest post. I am a few years away from having kids yet, but often worry when I think about losing all my hard work through pregnancy. I think it’s very important to have a strong plan and do your best to stick to it, but not be too hard on yourself if you don’t.
    Did you do any kind of training during your pregnancy? When did you stop?

    • Hi Tara, I don’t think you are alone, many women fear ‘losing’ their body through pregnancy. I believe that being in shape BEFORE you become pregnant is even more important than keeping up a consistent exercise regime while pregnant. I trained to 20 weeks but it was not structured at all. In the end I became frustrated as I was just not able to train how I used to (obviously). I kept up walking outdoors, and I took up pilates which I did 1-2 x week. So, I kept up with some activity but it was nothing structured – just when I felt like it and when I could manage it.
