I have ‘arisen’!

I’ve been prompted by an email from someone saying they miss my blog – so I am finally updating!

Firstly to my trip to the Big Apple in early November…

Saying goodbye to my little darling (and my big darling), was rather sad and there were a few tears. I couldn’t help but go through things like, what sort of a mother leaves her 12 month old daughter to jet off to NYC with a friend, and so on and so forth. I was feeling quite sick about it all, prior to leaving.

We did have a fantastic time though  and Nadia brought home the goods (literally, nearly 10kg of trophy hardware in her luggage!) from the competition. We did a lot of shopping, but unfortunately (maybe fortunately for the bank balance) it was going into winter there so I didn’t really want to be buying much in the way of cool weather wear.

We visited the World’s Largest Chocolate Show – plenty of tastings and worth every minute. Poor Nadia wasn’t able to even sample anything!

We had an awesome picnic in Central Park a couple of days after the comp. Central Park is amazing, so clean, and pristine – much like the city of NY really.

I visited the 9/11 Memorial which was very moving. In fact visited the actual site about 3 times but to get tickets to the memorial we had to line up first thing in the morning as they don’t just let everyone through.

We visited Times Square (a lot), Soho, Greenwich Village, did a hop on hop off bus tour, had dinner with Roman (Final Phase Fat Loss), ate a massive piece of cheesecake, and a full plate of baby back ribs (not at the same meal). Good coffee as usual over there was hard to come by.

Had a great trip, but after a week I was getting really homesick for my little girl and my boy.

The trip home could be described as nothing short of insane; starting in NYC and ending in Mildura about 30 hours later. With all of 2 hours sleep. Anyway, I don’t want to think about that anymore!

Kyah was rather standoffish when she greeted me at the airport. Like “hmmm, you left me for 12 days and so I don’t think I want to hug you or even smile at you just yet’. By the time we got back to our house she was all over me. She started walking while I was in New York :( Very bad timing on my behalf. Oh well, can’t do anything about that. Now she is a little trooper, walking everywhere! So funny. I’m loving this stage of her development. She’s such a happy, sociable little kid. Last night we took her out for dinner with us, dressed her up in a little white party dress with pink flowers on it. She sat in a booster chair and did not grizzle once – she was so interested in people walking past, the Christmas trees, and everything else going on. We were dining al fresco, so let her go for a walk and she just took off, mingling in with everyone, big grin on her face.

And, just a few days ago she said her first word (other than bub, mum, dad). She said ‘pretty’. I always tell her ‘pretty’ when I brush her hair or when she looks at my jewellery or sparkly things. Then she said it again to my mum while pointing at balloons.

Really looking forward to Christmas this year. We have a beach holiday planned and I can’t wait to sit back and relax!

Training is going well, even though I didn’t train once while in NY I didn’t put on any weight – which I find hard to believe. We walked and walked though. Not enough to walk off a big cheesecake and ribs though!

I haven’t even had time to post any pictures from my photo shoot, so here are a few below. I didn’t diet for these photos – I haven’t been on a ‘diet’ since my 2009 competition. Pregnancy seems to have done something very positive for my metabolism. I’m back to training 4 x week (when things go according to plan A or plan B). To be honest I haven’t been very consistent as there is always something that comes up like sleep deprivation or sickness (be that myself or Kyah, or even the day carer’s son). I went through a 2 month patch of severe night waking and was averaging 4-5 hours a night for that time. Thankfully I am sleeping a lot better now.

So, my training regime is 2 x week with a split of back/chest and legs/shoulders, plus two Crossfit type sessions which I structure depending on how I pull up from the other sessions. I’m getting my strength back finally, for so long I felt like a weakling and quite unsteady in the weights room. Sometimes I will do Back/Shoulders which is what I did yesterday. My lats are so sore today. Here’s what I did – try it out!

Pull Up (I used a band, and had a spotter – you could use an assisted machine if you have one available)

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 reps (with about a minute rest in between, less as the reps get less)

So you do 10 reps and rest. 9 reps and rest. 8 reps and rest, and so on. Total of 55 reps.

Bulldog Row (that’s what I call them) – 3 sets of 10 each arm. One arm rows on a cable (or with a resistance band looped around a pole) while kneeling on all 4s. These are awesome for targeting the lower lats.

TRX Pull – 3 x 10. If you don’t have access to a TRX then you could do reverse pushups on a smith machine, or any other back exercise you like.

DB One Arm Row – 3 x 10

Shoulder stand – basically just standing on my hands against a wall to develop more shoulder strength. I tried to transfer the weight from one shoulder to the other. That’s hard. You might need a spotter for this.

Alternating KB (or DB) Press – 3 x 10

BB Push Press – 3 x 10

BB Upright Row – 3 x 10 

As for Kyah and her sleeping – she sleeps like a dream. She is like clockwork. Up between 6-6.30 (that’s cool with me because I am routinely up at 5am – no alarm needed), back to bed 9-9.30am, up at 11am. Back for a nap at 2pm and up around 4pm. Then ready for bed again at 7-7.30pm and sleeps right through. With her molars coming through she’s had a couple of off nights but it’s only rarely. I so swear by the sleep routines!

So, that’s a wrap from this end – I so love being a mum, but do still struggle to fit everything in (like all other mums!) but I’m managing fairly well.

Going insane

With web techie stuff. I’m not a techie, so how do I know what I need for my sites? Why isn’t there something or someone out there that can help a regular non geek like me, understand what I need to get instead of finding out a year later that it wasn’t right, and I’ve spent thousands of dollars on something I shouldn’t have. Or getting different opinions everywhere you go but nobody explaining WHY. So frustrating. If anyone knows stuff about WordPress templates and CSS templates and sh*t like that and can help me, please please PLEASE contact me :)

Phew. Now where was I. Well I’ve been on a holiday to the Goldy – and the weather as per usual when I visit, was rubbish. It rained every day except for the day and day after we arrived. So, there were no visits to the beach. And, it was beautiful 22 degrees and sunny back in Mildy the entire time we were away. And, I got sick. Now I’m better, Damien has it – but about 3 x as bad as I did. Kyah hasn’t had her turn yet. Hoping for a miracle there. Kyah was great when we went away. We had a couple of babysitters who both said how awesome she was. Very easy to look after :) She had one bad night, that’s all, only because of her teeth. Poor darlin’ has 4 coming through all at once. She was great flying, slept on both flights on the way over, not quite as good on the way home but it was a long day! Leaving at 7.30am and getting home at 5.30pm. It was great to catch up with Kristin, Di and Hilary though :)

So, I haven’t trained for 2 weeks :( I had neck issues before we left and chiro instructed me not to train. I’ll be back into it tomorrow though. I am half considering doing a comp in April – am I insane? I feel like I want to try and be superwoman again. I have no grand illusions about being that competitive as I’ve dropped a fair bit of muscle, but, it would be nice to come back and compete after having a baby.

If I do I want to blog my experience and preparation. My goal would be to not do any cardio until I absolutely had to. I haven’t been doing any now, so I’d like to just train, and use the diet to drop the fat. In the past I’ve done copious amounts of cardio to reach the stage – I simply do not have the time (and definitely not the inclination) to do that again. I will talk to my trainer tomorrow. I want to incorporate some crossfit into my training.

Oh and I MIGHT be going to New York with Nadia for a competition! Stay tuned on that one.

Damien now is not traveling for work, phew. We can all be one big happy family at home.

So, there you have it – only a quick update today. Kyah is having a good old arvo nap, I might have to wake her up shortly. We went out for coffee with Nadia and Pete earlier, it must have made her tired!

Phew! Bubba pics and lots of stuff

My little angel is 9 1/2 months old now! She is crawling, well, her version of crawling – we call it the “Kyah Shuffle”.  She’s pulling herself up on toys and furniture, and, is starting to get into everything! She has 6 teeth fully through and another couple on the way. She sleeps like  – I can’t say a baby can I? We put her to bed at 7pm and within 5 mins she’s out like a light. She’s sleeping through most nights until at least 6am now. Every now and then she will have a bit of a cry, probably because of her teeth but we just hold her for 5 minutes and put some Bonjela on and put her back to bed. Last night we went to see some friends and took Kyah with us, and her sleeping bag and gear. She went to sleep on the floor, no problem. She did wake up crying a couple of hours later but 5 mins of holding her hand and stroking her head and she was back to sleep. It’s almost like she has a bad dream or something. Then we left at 10pm, had to wake the little darling, and she just has a tiny whinge when we wake her then sits in the car on the drive home, and straight back to sleep when we put her in bed! We have a couple of baby sitters and they both say she’s so good. She’s a happy, contented little thing.

Tonight I am home alone! Hubby took her for an overnight trip and I am using the opportunity to cook lots of food up for her, and do some things around the house in readiness for our holiday next week! We are off to the Gold Coast for a week. Our first family holiday. 

So, hopefully I can sleep in tomorrow! What a novelty that would be. I had a good night’s sleep last night, but the 2 nights prior, I was up at 3am. Like, up for the day. Could blame Kyah only one of those times.

Training wise I’m going well, only doing 2 x week, but those sessions are long and tough. My strength is improving with each workout. I’m still weighing under 50kg, but have definitely a lot more shape back now. I keep getting asked if I am going to do another comp. Honestly, the idea is nice, but the reality isn’t so nice! Just don’t think I want to bad enough for a start. Plus, I have a really big project happening as well as completely revamping my www.idealbodyblueprint.com site. It’s going to be awesome when done.

The other project is www.FemaleFatFreeSolution.com – Kristin and I have been working on this for some time, but finally I now have a partner ready to lauch with me and we are doing that in February.

The other thing to throw in the mix is that I’m going to pretty much be a single mum for the next 8 months or so. :( However, it is hopefully for the best. Damo has a job traveling, and will be away for 5 weeks straight almost as soon as we return from Qld. He’s having trouble already with the thought of leaving Kyah for so long. It will be tough for me too because Damien shares a lot of the child rearing responsibilities and so I will really feel it being on my own! Even though Kyah is in care 4 x week, when you throw in laundry, dishes, groceries, cooking (I cook all bub’s food), looking after Big Pud, other appointments and domestic jobs, you really have little time left for much at all. Add exercise to that mix, and sleep if I need to catch up after a bad night…but, for some strange reason I’m looking forward to the challenge. I think I can do it!

I just cooked up a few different things for Kyah. Broccoli, spinach and apple. Apple, ricotta, sultanas and rice, with a little cinnamon. Broccoli, ricotta, parmesan. Sweet potato – which tomorrow I will cook up some pumpkin and pasta, and add a little ricotta with that. I’ve done the egg test and the peanut butter test and all appears ok there. No allergies detected so far.

For me tonight I cooked up Lemon Mustard Herb Chicken courtesy of www.idealbodiesonline.com/fitcooking – Dave Ruel has an amazing fat loss cookbook and the recipes are so tasty, but easy as pie! A couple of nights ago I did Deviled Chicken – even Damo said it was ‘awesome’. Here is a pic of it – I sent the recipe around to my subscribers, if you didn’t get it, send me an email. 

So, that’s a quick run down of what has been happening here. I’m really looking forward to some warm weather – that hot snap of 4 straight days of 27 degrees has me hanging for summer!

Here’s how it works…

Personal Email Address, Daily Coaching, and More: Getting You Headed In The Right Direction…

Before we get started, let me explain to you how the personal coaching works. After you submit your payment (more on how to do that below), here’s what will happen in the coaching program.

Step 01: Send Your First Email. After your order is processed, I’ll send you my private, personal coaching email address. Send me an email to the address to get started. I need to get to know a little about you as we begin our coaching journey together. Specifically, I want you to answer three questions for me in your very first email so I can analyse your specific needs:

1. What are your goals? Both short-term and long-term. Clearly let me know what you want to accomplish with your fitness/fat loss goals and with the coaching program.
2. What is your current exercise program and diet program (if you have one) and how long have you been following them? Please provide as much information as possible so I have a clear picture of where you are at.
3. What is your most important question? Please let me know where you want to begin. I need to know what you think is most important and what you have in mind to address first. If you don’t ask a question, I can’t answer it. :-)

Step 02: Interact daily. Every day (Monday through Friday) you will receive a reply from me regarding your latest question. Each day you ask a question and each day I answer the question. You implement the changes and suggestions that I make. And we progress through the coaching program.It basically is a personal, one-on-one, question and answer coaching program. Each day you ask me one question. Each day I answer it with suggestions. Each day you implement the changes. We move on.

“Sue, I’m getting some great results with this program, but I don’t know if I can keep it up. I’m getting tired and am running out of energy. Do I just push through it?”

“Jane, this is a big issue that can lead to health issues down the track if you are not careful. Here is what I recommend based on my own personal experience…”

You ask the questions. I answer them. And by the end of the coaching program, you will have a much clearer perspective of how to go about achieving your results.

We can talk about anything you want related to fitness, nutrition, fat loss and muscle gain.

But, there are some “terms”. Please read these very carefully before proceeding…

The coaching program terms:

1. Only one question per day. Each day you may email ONE question for me to answer. If you ask more than one question, then I’ll only respond to the first one. Due to the nature of this program (literally, *personal* training where I take the time to look at your specific situation) I cannot answer more than one question per day. If you skip a day you don’t get to “catch up” later.

2. Holidays and weekends are idle days. We will take the weekends off, and any major holidays that may arrive during our coaching relationship. Trust me; we’ll keep plenty busy the rest of the days… we’ll both deserve the break.

3. The content is up to you. We don’t have a set “curriculum” that we’re going to work through. There isn’t a checklist to make our way down. There are no ebooks to read, no audios to listen to, no training to complete. What we cover is completely up to you. It’s the best way I know of to make certain you get the kind of information and specialized assistance that can best help you. You ask any questions you want, and I’ll answer them.

4. I’m not a doctor, so be warned. Having said “you ask any questions you want”, let me make a disclaimer: I’m not a medical professional. I’m not your woman if you are looking for assistance with specific health and injury issues. What I know is how to get your body in tip top shape. So, your questions need to be specifically related to that.

5. If you ask crazy questions, I’ll give you a crazy answer. Please don’t ask any silly questions. Sorry, but I have to include this in the “terms” or I’ll get stuff like, “Sue, please tell me how to lose 20kg in 6 weeks” or “Sue, give me a training program that gets results in 15 mins 3 x week”. If you ask those kinds of ‘pie in the sky’ questions, you just wasted your money. What we’re trying to accomplish here is and improvement in your fitness and fat loss results. We can only do that by asking (you) and answering (me) questions that are realistic.

6. You will not receive any training or diet programs as part of this coaching program. I can definitely provide advice on what I feel will be best for you (if that’s what you want), but an actual program is not included in this coaching program.

7. You’ll hear from me every afternoon or evening. Every afternoon or evening (Monday through Friday) you’ll hear back from me on your current question of the day. Please make certain that you have your new question emailed by 12 noon EST in order for me to respond. If you miss a day, you can’t make it up…so get them in there on time. The earlier the better!

8. We work in 2 week blocks of time. When you join today, then you’ll have two weeks of coaching available. (Monday through Friday) Your coaching will end exactly two weeks from the day you began.

9. Work at your own pace. Each day I will give you suggestions for changes and improvements. You can work at your own pace to accomplish them. It’s completely up to you how quickly you want to implement the strategies we talk about. Because of that, I cannot guarantee what we will accomplish during the training. NOTE: Whether or not you get things done each day or not you can still ask questions for me to answer – you can always implement them AFTER our coaching time is done.

Recently I had the chance to interview the charming Adam Steer, and asked him some questions about the program which I know would be relevant to my readers.

 
SH: Hi Adam, congratulations on your new Shapeshifter program – it looks fantastic and a program I feel would benefit many of my readers. Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions about the program for us. In a nutshell, what is Shapeshifter and why did you create it?

 AS: Shapeshifter was born from our frustration with what we saw as one-dimensional “transformation” programs. There’s no shortage of diet and exercise plans out there that’ll help you lose “weight”. But they all just leave you with a smaller version of the same flabby body!

SH: Talk to me about the “P6 Elements” – the ‘guts’ of the Shapeshifter program.

We realized that our frustration with our results in the past, and those of our clients, were often due to the one or two dimensional approach of most diet and exercise philosophies. Most training programs focus on ONLY cardio or weight training or yoga, etc. Most diets have a singular focus on “low carb” or “low fat” or whatever the trend du jour is. 

It’s only when we started taking the BEST elements from each philosophy that we started really getting the accelerated body redesign results we needed. 

SH: And it’s all bodyweight exercises, right – you don’t need to have any equipment whatsoever?

That’s right. You can really do the Shapeshifter workouts anywhere and anytime! Sometimes we suggest the use of very simple props to modify the difficulty of an exercise. But generally they are things you can find around your house or workplace like the bottom step of a set of stairs or a solid coffee table. But it’s all bodyweight exercises. No equipment required. 

SH: So these exercise routines would be excellent for those who travel often, can’t get to a gym or don’t have any equipment? And also for those who do go to the gym but are looking for a change of pace – I mean, some of those exercises look very challenging! 

This program is for ANYONE who wants to quickly and safely change the way their body looks. It definitely provides variety for people who have been doing equipment based workouts at the gym. But the program stands on its own no matter your level of experience. 

But yes, because it’s equipment free, Shapeshifter is also an excellent alternative for people who travel a lot. All you need is a corner of your hotel room floor to be able to do most of the exercises. 

One of our clients spends 3 days at home and 4 days in a hotel room every week as part of his job. He loves the fact that he never has to break the rhythm of his workouts because it doesn’t matter where he is, he can always do them.

SH: Can the program be adapted to an individual’s fitness level? Ie Is it for beginners as well as advanced trainees?

Absolutely! In fact, we ran an extensive “beta test” of the program last year and the participants ranged across the board with regards to background and fitness level. Not only did this prove to us that the program was adaptable to all levels from beginner to advanced, but it allowed us to add even more tips and tricks to adapt the workouts to your own level. 

Also, in the video instructions for each exercise, whenever possible we give several options for modifying the exercise to make it easier or more difficult. 

SH: Now, this is interesting, because I know a lot of people who would consider bodyweight exercise to be not as challenging or beneficial as a program that includes equipment. I know this is not necessarily true, but as the expert, could you explain the benefits of bodyweight training to my readers?

Most people who already work out a lot are totally surprised by the power of bodyweight when used to it’s potential.

First off, because you can move the body quite freely in every plane, you have the potential to recruit a LOT of muscle through full body exercises. And because these movements are more complex than what you can create with the 2 dimensional path of most weighted training tools, you need a lot more coordination to do them. That means more neural activation and again more muscle recruited and more calories burned. Pretty cool…

Another great benefit of bodyweight is how quickly you can move from one movement to another. It allows you to set up powerful fat loss circuits because you can move from one movement pattern to another with rapid transitions and little rest. And you can keep working hard for an extended period of time because you keep switching movement patterns.

And finally, some people think you can’t build strength with bodyweight. But how many people can drum off 10 pistol squats or one-arm push ups? Single limb work, isometric holds, explosive exercises and a host of other training methods are super effective using bodyweight and most people haven’t come anywhere close to their potential when it comes to using them to build impressive new levels of strength.

But I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. My goal isn’t to make people suffer. All the bodyweight progressions I use are scalable. So I can be training a total beginner and a hardened veteran in the same session, and they’ll both be getting exactly what they need. That’s another great thing about bodyweight.

SH: Awesome. What about diet and lifestyle – what sort of things do you cover on these crucial subjects?

Body redesign will never work with training alone. You need to support the training with a complete diet and lifestyle program.

Coping with pregnancy and motherhood – and my training

I’m back! Isn’t time flying? I like to think positively, so let’s see, winter will be over in just 2.5 months! And the longest day is coming up soon, which means we’ll be over the other side of the ‘hump’!

I’m back into training and I’m feeling rather good again. I’m doing 3 x week, 2 with a training partner and I am really finding my mojo returning! Boy let me tell you, did I get sore after my first session.  I thought you might be interested in the workout I did today. Here it is:

Kyah is growing up so quickly! She is now 7.5 months. Hard to believe.  She’s an absolute joy now, this age is just beautiful. And she’s sleeping through the night! She’s had her fair share of chest infections, gastro and now another little cold, but this will be par for the course I imagine. We went on a trip to the Barossa Valley for 4 days over the recent long weekend. She traveled so well and was great ALMOST all the time. Apart from the night we went to a dinner party – we had just sat down to eat the main course and she started to cry. And wouldn’t stop! We ended up bundling her up in the car and going home. It’s certainly different when you have kids! Which leads me to the next part of my post. I’m often asked how I manage/managed pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood. So, I wrote a little article. I hope you enjoy it :)

How I coped with pregnancy and motherhood

Do you ever wish there were more than 24 hours in the day? Do you imagine how much you’d accomplish if you didn’t have to sleep? It sure can be a difficult thing to manage a home, a career, a relationship, be a mother, a daughter, a wife and a domestic goddess all rolled in to one. Add getting in shape to all that and things can seem pretty impossible.

As a new mum at the ripe old age of 41, this was a new challenge for me late last year. Prior to this I was an independent woman who ran my company business from home and trained and slept whenever I felt like it. I used to compete in figure competitions, so I was very busy and I worked hard, but my husband and I could pretty much do what we wanted, when we wanted. Now, we have a beautiful addition to our family and I love my 6 month old daughter with a love that I never knew existed – but that luxurious world of independence that once existed has been totally crushed!

I was prepared for it as much as I could be. I’d heard stories from other women about how they lost their pre pregnancy shape and never regained it, and that they never had a moment to themselves when the kids came along. I admit – I was a little bit scared.

I’d had my fair share of body image issues and disordered eating patterns in the past and I definitely didn’t want to revisit those topics. Funnily enough, childbirth didn’t worry me (although in hindsight it should have!), but losing ‘my life’ and my body as I knew them were my major concerns.

I actually talked to my husband at length about my concerns prior to getting pregnant. I had a career, one that paid our mortgage, so I was never going to be able to be a ‘full time mum’. Training was part of my life – it’s what I do, I don’t just talk the talk, I definitely practise what I preach and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to continue that. My husband was great, and he was adamant that he intended to share the child rearing responsibilities.

I’ve never been a great sleeper, so this was my biggest worry initially. I had no idea how I was going to be able to look after a newborn and get enough sleep to enable me to run my business – let alone get back in shape! I’d heard that if you managed to actually have a shower before lunchtime you were doing well! Crikey!

About 8 weeks before the birth, I prioritized.

My baby and my health were my number one priority. Even though I’d put on 16kg (35lb) I wasn’t too concerned about it but I knew that even if I didn’t have time for exercise yet, there was definitely something I could do to start my way back to great shape. So, this was my simple list of priorities after Kyah was born:

  1. Get enough sleep so I could cope with the new challenges that would come my way
  2. Get back to the nutrition principles that I know get me lean and keep me lean
  3. Walk outdoors with my baby, when possible

Pretty simple really!

Prior to the birth I made sure that I had delegated as much of my business tasks as possible to my wonderful Programs Manager Kristin, though being a Managing Director of your own company means you will never be able to fully delegate everything. I talked to my husband about the need for some time each week to keep up with the basics. So basically I had a plan for my business after the birth.

I also decided that exercise was not a priority at this early stage and that I wouldn’t beat myself up if I wasn’t able to exercise regularly (or at all). Consequently, I think all I managed was a couple of walks and one gym session in the first 8 weeks.

I did however concentrate on eating good food, and found that because of my previous fitness lifestyle, that the weight came off easily. Within 10 weeks I was only 2lb off my pre conception weight. I highly recommend being in shape prior to conceiving ladies!

The first 3-4 months of being a new mum was very challenging. I still had a very busy business to run, and a household to tend to, as well as a beautiful little girl who was diagnosed with reflux at 2 weeks old.  I also had to go back to hospital for surgery for retained placenta 2 weeks after Kyah’s birth – I spent 2 more nights in hospital.

My husband and I played a bit of tag which allowed us both to get enough sleep to deal with everything else we had going on. I wouldn’t have been able to manage without my husband who shared the responsibility of night feeds, bottle washing and general household duties. So, you could say we didn’t have a smooth start to parenthood.

I’m happy to say that things do settle down somewhat after that initial period that is much like a whirlwind. However, I realize it’s never going to be the same as it was without kids, and nor would I want it to be. I have discovered that success (in anything) is all about priorities, and this is a topic that you will see raised again and again in my upcoming blog posts.

A final word of advice for all mum’s – please, do not put too much pressure on yourself – keep reminding yourself you do an amazing job, every single day. It is really important you be kind to yourself!

My 5 best and worst diets – and what I eat

I often have people ask my opinions on various diet and exercise programs that are available so I thought I’d review a few and let you know my five best, and five worst – and the reasons why. Please bear in mind this is my personal opinion, based on my experience and trying different programs and diets over the years. If you disagree with me that’s ok :)

The 5 Worst Diets:

Cohen’s Diet

The portions are so small they wouldn’t satisfy a fly. They also tell you not to exercise ‘because it may make you binge’ (this *may* be because you are starving). I’ve had a number of clients come to me after ruining their metabolisms via this particular diet. Big thumbs down to this program.

Tony Ferguson/Ann Morgan/Celebrity Slim etc

These are all ‘shake diets’. Generally these are based on eating 1 meal a day, and 2 shakes. Yes, you’ll lose weight if you are only drinking liquid as a meal, but it’s not really going to be sustainable. Something that bothers me is that they make out these shake to be healthy – when in fact sugar is one of the main ingredients.

These next 3 aren’t particularly terrible, but they have flaws and the big one is that they do not contain a resistance training portion as a key part of the program. You can diet all you like, but if you don’t train right, you won’t change your body shape or get that lean, firm look most people are after.

Jenny Craig

JC is mostly packet food so it’s portion controlled – which is necessary for weight loss to occur.  Packet food though is processed food. Not that good for you and not that good for fat loss. It’s also a very expensive way to get your food.  A good thing about this program, and Weight Watchers below, is that they provide support and accountability. I don’t really like how they showcase celebrities who have lost a bit of weight, but still have a whole lot more to go. They are still in the obese/very overweight category.

Weight Watchers

As far as I am aware, WW doesn’t instruct on what types of foods to eat – it is based on a points system and you can eat all your points in junk food if you prefer. This won’t get you the body you want. I believe they may have a new program now that is nutritionally better – you can fill me in if you know about it.

Lite ‘N Easy

Great for convenience, but in my opinion this is not a long term option. How long can you go on getting your food delivered? A big part of successful, long term weight loss and maintenance is the ability to make it a lifestyle. You must learn how to plan in advance and be efficient and effective in the kitchen! It’s really not hard. It is another very expensive option. The food is heavy on the carbs, light on the fat and protein – the old fashioned way of dieting that we know doesn’t work!

**As mentioned, with JC, WW and Lite ‘N Easy there is no strategic exercise component – it’s more about just being a little bit active. While this might be ok for overweight people to lose a few kg, it won’t get you in awesome shape if that’s your aim so keep that in mind. These diets are not designed to be used in conjunction with a challenging exercise program (which is the only way you will get an awesome body!)

Ok so what the BEST programs to consider if you want to really get in great shape. Well firstly it MUST contain a challenging resistance training portion.

“So, Sue, what do YOU eat on a regular day?”

People are always intrigued about what I eat. I often trial new diets and ways of eating so my diet varies at times but I also have my usual staples that I probably will always eat.

At the moment I don’t need to lose any weight – I’m sitting only about 2-3kg off my stage weight and around 13% body fat.  I’ve been experimenting as I am designing a new diet program – it’s based on cleansing and detoxing and includes plenty of antioxidants to fight cellulite, uneven fat deposits, and fights aging.

So I had a ‘lemon/maple smoothie’ which contains lemon juice, pure maple syrup, some Udo’s Oil for essential fatty acids as well as a few fat burning and cleansing spices. So refreshing!

My usual breakfast every day is oats made into porridge, sweetened with some stevia, with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter mixed in, topped with cottage cheese, a drizzle of pure maple syrup and some bran cereal (lots of fibre!).

Later today I had a green smoothie! This was a first for me. I generally can’t stomach green drinks. But this was yummy! It contained spinach, kiwi, banana, apple, whey and a few other things. Thanks to my lovely friend Di for this recipe.

For lunch I had some taco mince with broccoli, sweet potato, pumpkin, avocado and a sprinkle of cheese.

Dinner, well, Damien was in charge and he cooked up schnitzels, mash and veggies. Not my usual fare, but if I were dieting I would have something like a leafy chicken salad with avocado, or a salmon fillet with veggies.

Is it suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, providing you eat dairy, eggs, cottage cheese, it’s perfect.  It isn’t
suitable for vegans however.

Is it just a cheat meal or a whole day, and are there any restrictions?

It’s a cheat DAY (5 of them in total, yay!), and there are no restrictions
other than you don’t stuff yourself so full that you feel sick.  It’s really
important you DO eat plenty (and in particular, carbs and fat), to make this
work.

You mention fast days, that sounds a bit scary?

Yes it does a little, but, because of the strategic make up of the program, you
will find the fasting days relatively easy.  You just need to make sure you
have had a decent cheat day the day prior, and that you drink plenty of water.

Are there supplements involved?

Is a low carb diet sustainable?

With the low carb diet craze all the rage these days, one important question to ask is: “Is a low carb diet sustainable?” Can you lose weight and keep it off once you go off a low carb diet?

The quick answer to this question is no. However, don’t stop reading now. As with any successful diet out there, the idea is to turn the diet into a lifestyle of healthy eating. So, as with low calorie or low fat diets, in order to sustain the amazing weight loss achieved on a low carb diet, the dieter must turn the diet into a lifestyle once the excess weight is gone. So, the long answer is yes, a relatively low carb diet is sustainable – and desirable, for long term leanness.

Let’s explore this thought further by examining what happens to the body on a very low carb diet. When you stop ingesting carbs your body enters what is called ketosis. Ketosis is when your body is actually using fat for fuel instead of sugar. This state is the very reason why you have rapid weight loss on a very low carb diet. It’s also the reason why your brain gets fuzzy – glucose (what carbs are broken down to in the blood stream) is the preferred fuel source for your brain!

The other benefit to a low carb diet is the fact that the body isn’t losing muscle providing you are getting enough protein and overall calories - and that you are lifting weights/doing some form of challenging resistance training. Protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle tone and so is exercise, which is why a low carb diet is great for burning fat and keeping muscle. If you do reduce your carbs you may need to increase your good fats (omega 3, 6, 9) intake to boost your overall calories.

As with any diet, it’s very important to not deprive yourself of essential nutrients like calcium, fibre and protein. Calcium is pretty easy to get on a low carb diet through cheese, cottage cheese and canned sardines or salmon. Protein is also very easy to get from lean meats, eggs, cottage cheese and whey protein. Fibre is probably the most difficult nutrient to obtain from a low carb diet, but you can incorporate some carbs such as brown rice, oatmeal, berries and legumes.

If your diet is low in carbs and calories it is really important you do include a carbohydrate ‘refeed’ as such, so your body does not adapt to the very low carb regime, and, so that the carbs you do ingest are used to refill muscle glycogen stores, meaning faster muscle recovery and growth and more energy. Besides, a very low carb diet can get mighty boring in a hurry and a refeed is something to really look forward to!

Once you reach your desired leanness and you’re ready to begin increasing your carb intake, it’s important to do so slowly. The day you hit your goal, you don’t want to run out for a big bowl of pasta and a tub of ice cream. However, you can allow yourself some treats once in a while, but as with any diet, if you want to maintain your new weight, you must continue to eat healthily and exercise regularly.

This is ridiculous!

It has indeed taken me almost TWO months between posts this time – and I thought it was going to get better! Let’s see now, where do I start…

Kyah is just adorable, of course, but not only because she is my baby :)   She is 5 1/2 months old now, and has her two bottom teeth already. Her first came through at 4 1/2 months, and the next one 2 weeks later. So that was a bit of a grizzly old time, but wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. She did have a little cold as well, and for two days was pretty miserable. She still has a bit of a cough which has gone to her chest now. I’m hoping that clears up soon or I will have to take her to the doctor. She has just started on solids and is having a ‘bite to eat’ 3 x day now. We have pushed her feed times and bed times back a half hour and this so far, along with the introduction of solids, has had a good result for sleeping longer between feeds and lasting until close to 7am instead of bloody 5.30am!

Me, well I am struggling along a little bit. I’ve had some gastro problems for the past 4 months and as a result, I’m now feeling very washed out and fatigued, even when I get enough sleep. And when I don’t, well, that’s not real pleasant at all! I have been to my GP a couple of times, but now am off to see a gastroenterologist on Monday. I’ve considered that perhaps childbirth/surgery has triggered celiac disease and that I am now gluten intolerant. I’m just guessing, but it can do that. I don’t have an appetite, and I am losing weight without exercising, something I have never done before in my life. I’m weighing about 51kg at the moment, less than when I conceived. Of course I have lost some muscle mass too though.

Right, so now it’s Saturday…last night she slept beautifully and has continued that this morning – if only it were this easy all the time! I feel like a million bucks today, compared to yesterday!

Mum is coming around to help me get her room organized, it has clothes and stuff everywhere, just one of those things that has gotten on top of me and I haven’t gotten around to fixing it up. Had a little bit of a meltdown yesterday as things were getting on top of me a bit, but amazing what a good sleep does for you.

We are going away for Easter, to Goolwa (SA) for 3 nights. That will be a 4.5 hour drive for us – I wonder how Kyah will go.
