A week to go

This really has been the week from hell!  I am just trying to hang in there basically.  I think I pushed myself too hard when I was early on in my cold and it completely exhausted me where I could barely function and my blood sugar levels were going crazy as I was craving uncontrollably – again.  It’s a huge fight, I feel like I have been fighting my body the whole way almost, it just does not want to play this game.  But, I’m committed to seeing it through, I really do want to get up there anyway, even though I won’t be in the best condition.  It will be fun to be doing it with Nadia (who is looking sensational) and Kathy is helping me backstage.  The show is only a small one, there weren’t any entries in Masters so I am going to do Intermediate just so I can have some competition.

Thank you Peta, that’s lovely and great to hear you are doing really well.  And thank you to everyone else leaving comments, it’s really great to have your support.

Re the water and salt – when you overload your body with water, then remove sodium, then reduce your water back to normal, your body will flush all excess water and leave you firmer, and more defined as there is no water under the skin.  It’s what all competitors do to help achieve the look that is required.

Well yesterday I woke up still feeling crappy – my head was still spinning, but my cold is much improved.  I was going to have a day off training as I felt I needed it, but, then I felt guilty, being this close.  It was my last leg session before the comp.  So, I decided to go.  Glad I did, as I did have a good session, and, my knees are all better now!  I was able to do the knee extension with no pain at all, and lunge.  I did 8 sets of knee extensions and my quads were definitely feeling it – I was supersetting squats and then walking lunges and then jump squats, with the extensions.  I even made myself go for a walk later too, it was only half an hour but it was the fact that I did it more than anything.

I’m toying with doing a creatine load for the comp.   I’m a bit scared of the scale weight gain but it should all be water in my muscle, making them bigger, but some people say it bloats them and makes them less defined, but I am having two very knowledgeable guys telling me the opposite and I should do it.  Hmmm.

So today I will be doing cardio in a minute, and then walking to the gym to meet Nadia at 12 where we are finally going to practise our routines!  They have been rather neglected!

My final week training will just be full body 3 sets of 10 each day, no legs, and on the Friday I will do just 2 sets.  Saturday off.  I will continue to do cardio throughout up until Friday.  I will start water loading (5lt) as of tomorrow, and salt loading (can I even load anymore than I already do!!), for the next 3 days.  All artificial sweeteners will go, I will use stevia if needed.  Then on Thursday and Friday I will drop all added salt, while still water loading.  I will up my carbs by 20%. I will full body shave and tan up on Friday, and, on Sat I will drop my water back to normal.  By then I should be feeling a bit tighter.  Ok, well off I go for cardio.  I think I will make it a good one this morning.

Getting there…

I think!  I’m on the other side of the cold now, bit of a dry raspy cough and headaches, still my head feels like it’s full of cotton wool, and I felt a bit sick actually most of the day.  I’m sooooooooooo proud of me for getting my training done and diet has been A+ as well.  Training my heart rate was through the roof and my throat was so dry and parched, felt like I couldn’t get enough oxygen, my chest hurt.  I think I re-hurt my shoulder/back/neck as well, as I have another headache running up the back of my neck.  Bring on the Ice Gel!  I’m a bit of a wreck at present but still ticking over!  I tried to sleep a couple of times today but couldn’t for some reason.  Sure felt like it.  Hopefully tonight I will get a good one.

So I got a few more pics back but unable to save them as files, however I sent them to a few people I know as I’m not sure what class I should do, Masters or Intermediate.  Original thoughts were to do Intermediate, then I was told to do Masters, but I found out there is so far nobody in Masters!  I don’t want an empty trophy!  The promoter told me that I would be very competitive in any class after he saw my photos (won’t say what else he said!) so that was good to hear.   Better make a note to definitely enter tomorrow since it’s the last day!

I did a rough final week plan last night.  Think I’ve got it all together.  Tomorrow is chest and rear delts, plus abs and I had better run through my routine to music.  Going to meet Nadia on Sunday to practise posing and routines.  I booked my tans today – have to have them all on Friday which is not what I was hoping for.

Well, it is all coming up very quickly!  Not looking forward to drowning in water again as of Monday.

And Janet, I answered your question via email but the show is at the Norwood Hall on Sunday April 26, starting at 2pm.

I feel like cr*p!!

I thought I would be on the mend by now, but I was coughing my lungs up last night, and my throat was getting a bit sore.  I feel so stuffed up and spaced out.  My glands are the size of golf balls (well slight exaggeration).  I suppose better to happen this week than next.

I had another great sleep so that is good.  I plan to do a step class this morning at 10.30am.  Just enjoying my coffee at the moment.  Still waiting on a couple of photos from my shoot, was hoping to have some more back by now.

Hmm, I forgot to post this.  So anyway I did do the step class, well 3/4 of it.  Good workout, but cut it short as I didn’t want to wear myself out as I have to go back later.  My head feels like a big ball of cotton wool.  Time for a sleep.

Crook!

Must admit feeling better than I was yesterday, but still under the weather.  What next!!  I reckon I haven’t had a cold in about 2 years – very proud of my usually strong immune system.  Even when Damien gets one I never get it.  So not sure why now.  Guess I’m run down!

Just having my pancake and then will go to bed.  We had the folks around for dinner last night and I had to excuse myself at about 9pm and go to bed.  I was so tired.  I slept until 8am, apart from waking in the middle of the night all snuffed up in the nose.  So sprayed some Medic (Damien’s mum gave it to me, think that’s what it’s called) on my pillow, tissues and sheets to try and clear my head.  And apparently I was snoring.  Not surprised there!  I went back to sleep without a worry and so had a good rest.  I think if I sleep well tonight then I should feel much better tomorrow.

I had coffee and catch up with Lisa today which was great as I haven’t talked to her since she competed.  We talked a bit too long and had to cut our walk short so I didn’t get a very good cardio session in though my diet today has been great and it needs to be.  Felt really bloated today and the scales were telling the story at about 112ish.  I trained hammies and triceps today, pretty good session considering I’m all stuffed in the head.  No routine training today.

Ok, well I do have some emails to get to tomorrow, which I will try and do.  Selina, wow :)   Yours was an exciting one!

I apologise…

to all the people in the gym this morning, having to breathe in my germs.  Normally I wouldn’t go out of respect for others, but competition makes you very selfish!  So I feel very spaced out, and stuffed up in the head.  I had about 5 hours sleep max last night.  Made myself go to the gym and actually did a pretty good workout.  Very hungry after training.  Had to postpone my catch up with Lisa to tomorrow, hopefully I will be over the yukky bit by then.  I will go to bed now and rest.  Will drag myself out for a walk later.

As an aside, I get a lot of emails from people who like to run but at the same time want to lose weight.  Heres’s a typical one, and my response.

Hiya Sue
I had my first baby 11 months ago and have now set myself some goals of losing 10kgs and running a marathon in November (30kms).. so far I can run 5km easily on a treadmill twice per week, and do 3 classes of bodypump each week.  Sometimes though, I find myself feeling really tired, headaches and nauseous afterward and the symptoms can last a few days.  I figure it is lactic acid buildup but do you recommend anything to prevent this since it usually keeps me away from the gym for a couple of days.  Also, what kind of diet should I be following?

Warm Regards
Meagan
Hi Meagan, thanks for your enquiry.  Running a marathon requires specialist training and diet considerations – I wouldn’t be doing 3 x Bodypump sessions in addition to training for a marathon or you will end up overtraining (part of what you are experiencing now).  You need to fit some rest and recovery in there too.  If losing the weight is the biggest goal, I’d forget the marathon, there are much more effective ways to lose weight than running marathons!  You need plenty of carbs to perform at your peak for endurance training, yet for fat loss, you need to restrict carbs to a degree – they don’t really gel together that well.  I’d figure out what is your most important goal and then get yourself a targeted program for that purpose.

Blow out

Yes I thought that would get your attention!  Unfortunately it’s true, I did have a bit of a blow out last night.  It was just one of those nights where I was consumed by the hunger monster.  I put it down to two things.  One, it was leg day and I caned my quads that morning, along with biceps and abs.  Two, I’m pre-menstrual.  Those two things combined with walking the edge as far as keeping a balance goes, just tipped me over.  I trained well, had plenty of energy for the session.  Came home, ate, and did some work.  About an hour later, started feeling a bit exhausted, kind of dizzy/dazed/wiped out feeling that I get which I believe is an adrenal reaction.  I also felt very hungry again.  So I ate my 3rd meal, together with lots of sea salt, and had a sleep.  I zonked it for an hour and a half, and when I woke, as has been the case a lot of late, I felt so groggy and drained.  I cannot wake up properly and really struggle for the rest of the day.  I pushed myself to go for my cardio, which was only a walk but it was hard yakka.  I knew it was going to be a struggle.  I managed to last out the rest of the day, but dinner time came, I ate.  And I ate.  And yes, I ate.  I had two of my allocated meals one after the other, and even that did not satisfy me.  I then attacked more chicken, a half avocado with some cheese, and not one, but two, yes two – bowls of protein powder and raspberries!  Then to finish off, I ate the head off my Lindt bunny!!!  So Kathy, I doubt I shall bring half a bunny to Adelaide with me :)   But I do still plan to have the other half intact by then!  So, there you have it, warts and all.  I think you guys appreciate me being honest and not pretending I am perfect!!  Anyway I could have berated myself and beat myself up about it but I just went to bed – it was still early, about 9pm!!  I was just totally exhausted.  But satisfied!!  As I do, I weigh myself every morning and was a bit hesitant after my efforts.  However I was quite surprised I was in the 110′s still.  I am hoping it doesn’t catch up with me over the next few days but I think I should be ok as I was really really good today with my diet, and also did two really good cardio sessions.  I’m weighing in the 110′s tonight (so I’m a serial weigher – but I find it interesting), so I expect to possibly be my lowest weight yet tomorrow.  See what happens.

I caught up with my good friend Julie today, who is here for Easter, from Melbourne.  Her first comment to me was ‘gee you look thin’ so at least she noticed something different since last time!  We went out for coffee and a good old chin wag this arvo.  Tomorrow I am catching up with Lisa (a past client and Body Blitz winner, and now friend) for coffee and then we are going for a walk.  It will be good to have some company for my cardio!

I think I am getting a cold :(   Nice timing, not.  I have the sneezes and a snuffed up nose – not blocked just sort of itchy.  And feel a bit crook in the guts – to put it eloquently.  I always load up on Vit C powder as soon as I feel anything coming on, so I hope that will help me get over it quickly.  Unfortunately I can’t rest though.  Tomorrow it’s back to training, gym is open only in the morning so will train shoulders, back and triceps then, and walk with Lis in the arvo.

Finally THANK YOU to all you lovely ladies for your beautiful comments, my head is getting a bit big over it.  Not really of course but I do appreciate you stopping by and your support and encouragement.  If any of you live in Adelaide and would be interested in seeing the comp let me know!  I started re-learning my routine yesterday.  Took about 5 minutes before it started to come together – I will do some practise every day so I can do it without thinking.  At the moment I’m very proppy as I still have to think what comes next.  I will be thinking about how to approach the final week over the next few days.  I don’t think I will do a carb deplete or load, might just leave that as is and rely on the water and sodium to do the job.  Not quite sure how to approach the training, probably just keep doing what I’m doing, but a light workout that final week.  I believe I will still need to cardio unfortunately, would be nice if I was ready enough to have a rest from that.

I hope everyone enjoyed a couple – just a couple - of chocky eggs and are all back on track tomorrow!  For anyone who is interested, we currently have a really good special going on our Full Suport Programs – 12 weeks at less than $34 week – that’s $100 off the normal price.  For a limited time only!  See home page for details.

Catch ya :)

I managed to get a photo from one of the photographers, so here it is.  I was about buggered by this stage of proceedings!

Thanks again for all the wonderful support girls!

I had such a lovely birthday!

40th-me-2.jpg40th-sue-and-damien-2.jpg

Thanks for all the good wishes, it certainly made me feel very special!  It was a very hectic day, I literally didn’t stop.  After hair it was make up time and lo and behold, I rocked up and my make up artist said my appointment was the next day!  I had a bit of a moment then and I think I let an expletive fly but we sorted it out and I came back 45 mins later.  I went home and put my own foundation on to get a head start.  So that was all good, and what with my clip in hair extensions I looked a bit like a porn star.  The photo shoot was great, Excitations do a really good job.  I actually thought I looked good, and it has confirmed for me that I will do the show.  I still have a bit to lose on the top of my legs but am hoping with another 2 weeks that will disappear.  I have more muscle now.  The water deplete works wonders.

I finished up there and then home for a quick bite to eat (I was SO thirsty) and then back to my 2nd photo shoot!  I was a bit over it by then so I made sure it was quick.  These ones were in workout gear.  I got the ‘gee you look fit’ and ‘how often do you workout’ and ‘we are going to put a picture of you on our wall to remind us to do some exercise” questions and comments from the photographers.  I have to go back to choose my photos but have asked if they can get a couple ready for me early so I can stick up here.  Plus I just want to see them!

After I finished there I had a quick spa to get some of the tan off, and then got dressed up to go out for a drink with some friends.  That was relaxing and fun, I enjoyed a glass or 2 of wine and was very tired when I got home!

So, now I have to re-learn my routine!  Will do that over Easter.  Hope everyone has a lovely one and don’t run amok with those eggs.  I was given a Lindt rabbit last night and I will save him for show day.

40

It’s a pretty number I suppose. :)   Hey Rene like I said I thought 40 was the new 30 but if you say it’s the new 20, I’ll take that thank you!

Sitting here having my hair beautified.  I am so frickin’ thirsty!!!  I got my spray tan last night, 2 coats of the dark Sun FX and this morning after washing off the dregs I don’t look like I have a tan.  So I got the Dream Tan out and tanned up myself, got Damien to help with my back.  I have dehydrated down to 107.4lb, and so I think perhap I will probably do the show, though I won’t look any better than my last show.  Oh well.  I’ve come too far and put too much in to not do it.  Will just do it for fun now hey, and look forward to a big feed with Nadia after the show.

Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes, been texting and emailing all morning, it does make me feel rather special :)

Roberta, yes you definitely could do a comp, anyone can, just some do it easier than others that’s all.  I do have good days in between the bad ones!!  It really is a mind game though, you have to be pretty strong mentally and have a good support network.

Right well I will let them finish my hair and then get some face on, then drive out to get some snaps done.

Bye for now and thanks again :)

Water load over

I had a really bad day a couple of days ago.  My blood sugar seems out of control and my cravings are insatiable.   Thank goodness my water load is over, drinking that much makes me feel sick!  Back to 2 litres today.  That in conjunction with the salt deplete (which is going better than I thought) really works well that is for sure.  I have changed some things (again!) with my diet and cut out post training shake and raspberries to avoid any sugar spikes.  I’ve included more carbs and fat and overall more calories.

So, still don’t know what I’ll do!  But, am doing photos tomorrow and have found a few poses I want to copy.  I’m getting hair pieces put in, have never had them before, hope I don’t look like an idiot.  So tomorrow, yes, my 40th, will be coffee with Damien, I might go and do a light upper body workout but I doubt it!, hair at 10am, make up at 11.30am, pics at 1pm, 2nd lot of pics at 4pm, and then I will celebrate officially being over the hill with a nice glass of wine.  It will be a busy day no doubt.  I received  lovely birthday card from Eleni in the mail yesterday!  That was a nice surprise.

Ok, well today I have a chiro appointment, my shoulder/neck/back is still not quite right, I need to do cardio (might just walk there and back), and then train hammies.  I have to exfoliate and shave down and get my tan at 5.15pm.

Hope everyone has a lovely day…
