4 Tips to Stay Looking Young and Feeling Young
Being an older mum, people are often surprised when I tell them my age so today I thought I’d share a few tips that help me stay looking and feeling young…
1. Train with weights to:
- Increase your strength
- Increase your bone density
- Increase your metabolism
- Increase your fat burning ability
So I’m pushing 45 years old and I can bench press more than my bodyweight. I’ve deadlifted twice that. And, I used to be able to leg press 600lb (before I discovered leg pressing was contributing to my hip and lower back pain). Now I’m trying to master handstand push ups.
Why would I even want to do this you may ask? Well, aside from the fact it makes me feel kind of cool, as you get older, strength becomes even more important. If you don’t use it, you lose it. And I don’t wanna lose it. Becoming stronger helps you gain lean muscle which will increase your metabolism and help you burn fat. You’ll be able to eat more and not get fat!
I don’t consider myself overly strong. I mean there are many women who can lift a lot more than me on a weight to strength ratio. I’ve been training for 10 years so now every pound I add to a lift is a cause for celebration (because the longer you train the more difficult it is to progress). Building strength takes time but I love lifting heavy. It’s exhilarating.
Do I look like a man because I lift heavy weights? Hardly. I’m 5’3” and weigh 50kg (110lb). I’m tiny. But I do have sculpted feminine muscles and I can hoist my little girl up on my hip while carry a bag of groceries up the stairs. Stuff like that is what makes it cool…
It’s really important you train with a purpose. A structured program is a must – personally I’ve never been able to just wander into the gym and train. I find I end up skimping on sets, and don’t work hard enough. My results suffer and so will yours.
2. Find your purpose to life
I love what I do. I wake up in the mornings and can’t wait to get to my computer to start helping ladies like you achieve their fitness and fat loss goals. When I was employed by someone else I never used to have that passion for my job. But don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have passion and purpose.
When work wasn’t that exciting and fun for me, I turned my focus to achieving my best body ever. I decided to attempt a figure competition! While it was absolutely hard work and the challenge and discipline required was enormous, I’m sure you can imagine the satisfaction I got from achieving that goal. I’d go so far as to say that it really set me up for life, because now I KNOW that I can achieve massive things if I really want them. And so can you.
Now I also have another major purpose in my life and that is to be the best mother I can be to my 17 month old daughter, Kyah, and to spend time and enjoy watching her grow up as much as I possibly can.
If you find you don’t have that passion for your job or career, and are not in a position to change that aspect of your life in a hurry, find ANOTHER passion! Like right now!
How about this for a suggestion? I KNOW you want to look after yourself and get a better body or you wouldn’t be reading this email. There’s the ‘perfect passion’ for the next 12 weeks. Give yourself a deadline and book in a professional photo shoot. Prove to yourself you can do whatever it takes to achieve your goals! Who knows where it will take you! 3. Perform appropriate warm up, mobility and stretching exercises
As I’ve gotten older, I have started to get a lot of niggling injuries. Ignoring them or training through them doesn’t work (c’mon admit it, you’ve done it too). For the sake of 5-10 minutes prior and 5-10 minutes after a workout, you’ll be able to stay on top of injuries or injuries waiting to happen.
Sure warm ups, stretches, mobility drills and the like can be boring. But you don’t want to learn how important and necessary they are the hard way like I did.
If you sit at a desk for much of the day, one of the best stretches you can do to avoid back and hip pain is this one – do it 3 x day for immediate benefits:
Lunge into Hip Flexor Stretch
Lunge forward with your front leg at a 90 degree angle and your back knee almost touching the floor. Slowly push hip forward to create a stretch at the front on the hip while holding the lunge position. Step back and repeat with other leg. Repeat 6 times.
4. Don’t stress
Easier said than done right? Stress is an insidious condition that causes no end of health problems. I also learned this lesson the hard way, having suffered quite severely from adrenal exhaustion back in 2005. And now, if I don’t pay attention to my body, the symptoms come back.
We often are not aware of how stressed we really are. The first sign for me is when I start having problems sleeping. Usually it’s because I can’t switch off at the end of the day because my head is full of mumbo jumbo that won’t stop circulating (or because I’m singing “Old MacDonald had a farm, ee-i-ee-i-o!”)
Something that has helped me tremendously was to take a few hours and sort out a work and training schedule – I allocate my training times, and certain times of the day when I will work on specific things. During these times I turn off my email and avoid interruptions (I’ve allocated time for email too, and even for an afternoon nap!). This way I actually feel much more in control and hence, less stressed.
It’s important to keep reminding yourself to not sweat the small things. Whatever doesn’t signal the end of the world is not worth worrying about.
